Building Coolant System for Porter Cable 15″ Drill Press

In this video I make a real simple coolant system using some Loc-Line tubing, some 304L stainless scraps, some NPT fittings, a pump and a bucket.

Q&A:

jonathan asked band saw riser for Porter Cable 14″?

I am in need of a band saw riser. I have done searches and found various brands – Jet, Delta, etc.. but nothing specific to porter cable. It looks like most brands could be interchangable and the Delta brand, i’ve heard, is what porter cable copied from. The tool/hardware stores around here suck – ACE, HPM, Lowes, Home Depot…none have any accessories for band saws (risers, fences, decent blades / no size choices) and not many knowledgeable staff when i have specific questions.

And got the following answer:

Delta actually bought out Porter Cable awhile back, so, yes, you’re going to see accessories that will fit both brands.

I’d recommend that you contact the manufacturer by using the number listed in your owner’s manual, to see where you can go to get a riser for the saw.

If you just absolutely cannot find a riser to fit your machine, you can always contact a nearby machine shop, and have one made out of cast iron.

Good Luck

jonathan asked Whats the best band saw fence?

Kreg seems to be pretty reputable, and the Jet fence seems to be ok…i like the Magfence but im not sure how you would really get it square without a reference tape measure numbers on the side – i guess you could always measure from the fence to the end of the worksurface or miter gauge trough so its parallel to those things. I would be using this fence for resaw alot as well. I have a Porter cable 14″ band saw with a 16x 16 work surface

And got the following answer:

I’ve been a cabinetmaker and furniture builder for over 20 years and have never used a store bought band saw fence (or router table for that matter) as I’ve always felt them to be an unnecessary expense. I’ve had success using a shop built fence that I can make as tall and long as I need and simply clamping it to the table top. The only thing most professionals use one for is to resaw lumber and they only have to be square and parallel to the blade. Good results are much more dependent on a well tuned saw and properly aligned wheels and guides, though the the fence must be perfectly in line with the blade.

All that being said, Kreg makes excellent products and Jet does too. Not sure about the Magfence, but if it relies on magnets alone, I wouldn’t trust it because of the inherent vibration in a band saw. With a 14″ saw you’re not going to be resawing large pieces of very hard woods, so I’d recommend a well made shop built fence, even a dry 4 x 4 jointed to be perfectly square. What does the one from the manufacturer look like? You can always add a larger board to the face of it to give you more support. And you’re right, you should be able to align it to the miter gauge slot, whichever method you choose.

Vince asked Good quality band saw?

I’ve been wanting to build a guitar from stratch, but I need to get a few new tools to be able to do it. Can anyone point me to a good quality band saw for a reasonable price? Not necessarily cheap, just not overpriced. Thanks!

And got the following answer:

I have a Delta with a deep throat (three wheel) and it is great for cutting out guitar bodies. I bought it from my brother in law for $150. A steal. It is a decent but not industrial quality saw. I have other heavier saws for day to day use. Grizzly makes budget tools of a high quality. http://www.grizzly.com/ Much better than Craftsman. I have seen some really horrible Craftsman woodworking power tools. I will strongly recommend that you get a saw of quality rather than buying a cheap one because you won’t be using it much so forget about Harbour Freight. We do not know that you won’t be using it much though, do we? Bad tools will ruin stock and when you are making a guitar body or neck, that can be one expensive piece of stock to ruin, having glued up several pieces of lumber to make a blank. You are going to need a good plunge router too. But perhaps you know that and already have one. I swear by Porter – Cable power hand tools. Getting a little further from the subject, I find that a small block plane is a great tool for shaping guitar and bass bodies.
