How to Make Workbench Dog Holes, with Glen D. Huey

Popular Woodworking Magazine managing editor Glen D. Huey shows you how to make perfect, evenly spaced dog holes in your workbench top using a router.

Q&A:

Luciana asked Where can i find woodworking workbench plans?

Im looking for woodworking workbench plans. Im relatively new to woodworking and looking for best tutorial to get started and building something on my own what is the best place to get started.

And got the following answer:

Woodworker Supply Company – http://www.woodworker.com

this would be my choice for supplies and patterns. I love the one in Albuquerque. has everything for woodworkers. and do mail order.

David A asked how do I make a wheeled shop workbench from stock cabinets?

I saw an article somewhere (can’t remember) on how to assemble a shop workbench from stock cabinets available at home centers. Anyone know the magazine? The article would have been published in late 2007 or in 2008. Thanks.

And got the following answer:

Buy a strong cabinet out of solid wood, turn it upside down attach 2×4 or 2x6s to the bottom, then attach wheels to the bottom. Make sure to purchase 2 swivel wheels that have brakes on them and 2 regular wheels..

CysRoost asked What is the best way to seal a maple plywood workbench top?

I am building a reloading bench using the 2×4 Basics Workbench legs and I am using a 3/4″ maple plywood for the top. I want to seal the top and the 2×4’s (kiln dried fir not treated 2×4’s) but don’t have much experience with stains sealers or poly’s. Thanks for your input.
I also wanted to add that I don’t necessarily need or want to stain the plywood top since it will be a finished surface with nice wood grain already. Would a polyurethane or a polycrylic be better? Or would something else be better?

Most of the work done on this will be using lead, cooper, gunpowder, some brass case lubricants, there will some tools ” gently tossed around” There will also be a tumbler (http://www.stainlesstumblingmedia.com) that will be on the bench as well.

And got the following answer:

Polyurethane would be fine for legs and sides. Some people find polyurethane too slippery for a bench top and it will crack and craze under impact (ditto lacquer, shellac, and varnish). As a woodworker (rather than a reloader) I prefer a penetrating oil finish (boiled linseed oil or tung oil). It will resist water and glue, and it’s relatively easy to sand/re-coat it whenever needed.

dave asked Where can I get a good workbench in NYC?

I need a good sturdy workbench. Craigslist and online are out because of costs and bad leads. Looking for a sturdy workbench that I can look over and buy on site.

And got the following answer:

Try Harbor Freight.
this one is on sale where I’m at for about $130, and it’s actually pretty good. I bought two and put them back-to-back. You need to assemble, but it only takes about an hour each. Read the reviews on their site.

Charles G asked What size should I make my workbench?

I am building a workbench. actually 2. But I was wondering what I should make my depth. I have my height and my length figured out one is around 45inches and the other around 32. And both with a height of 37. I want to put casters on them to make them movable and I don’t want them to be too top heavy. Most standard benches are around 24 but that seems a little to small. I plan to use it to weld metal on as well as some woodworking. I want it as functional as it is rigid. Any suggestions or engineers that can answer my third grade question would have my thanks as well as my ear. I will edit if you need more info. Thanks for all your answers in advance!

And got the following answer:

It all depends on what you are going to use it for and if you are going to have shelving below. If you have items that are larger than 24″ that you want to place on top of or on shelving below, measure those items and go with the largest one. I built an entertainment center once and forgot to measure the T.V. . Luckily, I made it too deep and not the other way around.

If you don’t anticipate having any shelves to store things, and you are using the casters as you mentioned just make them 24″ deep. You can then put both of them together if you have something larger to put on them.

Amelia D asked How do you get a workbench in Sims 2 Castaway for PS2?

It’s probley easy to find but how do you get a workbench? I can’t find it anywhere from the, menu nothing!

And got the following answer:

You’ll need to find 2 stones that look like the legs of a workbench (or table if you haven’t seen one yet). Approach it and you should get the option to build a workbench.
