Q&A:

Cullens C asked What is the difference between tournament poker and cash poker?

And got the following answer:

Good morning Cullens C.

I hope you are having a good week. I just finished my morning walk at Venice Beach. I would like to share with you.

http://www.venicebeach.com/

I don’t know how much poker you play. I hope you can follow my answer to you. I play poker more than once a week for over forty (40) years. That does not include Las Vegas, Indian casinos, or private games. I have been a hustler with a job my whole life. I retired from working at a very early age. You must understand who I am in order to give creditability to my answer.

I grew up in the projects for soldiers returning from WW2. In the hot summer days, we would shoot pool all day. You think some of the people on television are good at pool? The nights were very hot and there were only a few televisions (1950). We played cards with the grown-ups all night. As a kid, you loved to beat the adults. We played Dirty hearts, Bid Whist, and Pinochle all night. Me and my brother at age 6 and 8 were the best. I could count, remember card suits, and handle a deck of cards like a fine woman.

I got very lucky in life. I landed a job with the I.L.W.U. (International Longshoreman & Warehouse Union). I made big money for a 19 year old kid. The men had no limit poker games every (2 weeks) pay day. I also started playing poker at local casinos in Gardena every week. I was a true gambler in cards and pool.

Later, I was drafted into the army. I became a sergeant while serving with an elite Assault Helicopter (part 101st airborne division) Company deep in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam during Tet 1968. We played poker and a game called Hi-Lo, or Ace- Duce or In-between. I always knew which cards were still in the deck. I mailed home a lot of money from Vietnam. They almost did not let me out of the army. They claimed I made the money from illegal activities.

Today, you and I watch television. I watch it with a deck of cards. I deal out half the deck and look at each card for a second. I can tell you 100% of the time which cards by number and suit are still left in the undealed deck. I have been during this exercise for years.

I played in one poker tournament about fifteen years ago. I saw what a joke it was back then. But I saw it was the future. I call tournament poker, “Television Poker”. Today’s young poker players think this is normal poker. Tournament poker brings in new blood, meat, or suckers into the game of poker because people see poker on television. It looks easy. Tournament poker is great for the game of poker, and people who make a good (like me) living at poker. What do I mean, “Television Poker”?

In tournament poker, the producers have to speed up the game and make it come to an end within their time table. At the start, the game is normal. Half way through the contest, because of the increased blinds, luck plays an increasingly bigger part of the game. They keep increasing the little and big Blinds. Some tournament blinds will start at $100 and $200. Half way through the tournament the blinds are up to $1000 and $2000 or higher. This means a poker player would be losing $3000 for each round he did not play. A player ends up playing hands that they would not normally play.

Tournament poker makes the producers money, the sponsors money, and a few players money. It is one big party. Everyone has their opinions, but I call tournament poker a joke.

Near the end, a true poker game now becomes 99% luck. In some television tournament poker games, half of the players receive money even when they lose. In the 2009 Championship Tournament, Chris Ferguson ended in 561st position. He received a check for over $23000.

My answer to you, Cullens C., Texas Hold-em tournament poker is NOT TRUE POKER. It is like Lotto or raffle in which people put their money into a pool in order to win the prize. The prize is a pot of money.

Dictionary definition of the word “Raffle”: A form of lottery in which something is put up as a prize goes to someone among a number of persons buying chances to win it.

You and your family have a nice day. Peace, from Los Angeles.

smile giggle monster asked how to cut angles on a delta shopmaster scroll saw?

i have a delta shopmaster scroll saw. It has a angles option, and at the bottom of the saw there is a protractor type thing, but when i try to move the angle the saw moves a few degrees but then hits the side of the platform (table) of the saw. does anyone know how to work it, and can give me step by step instructions, or a link to somewhere that can.

thanks <3

And got the following answer:

smg,

sometimes scroll saws have different throat plates that are used when cutting angles. The toughest would be trying to cut a 45 degree. If the blade hits the side, and you don’ have alternate plates to swap out, then just leave the plate off completely. That should give you the added clearance to get the job done.

I’ve used a scroll saw for years and years, but haven’t had that problem. I own a delta too, but mine is about 10 years old. Also, it’s better to tilt it with the left part of the bench downwards.

Andres asked Can anyone help me with old table saw.?

Yea i got this old table saw. Its old.! it was in the basement to the house we moved in to like 8 years ago. we been using it ever since. it been working good. Now it got broken but the motor is good and running so kept it and thew the other parts. Do any body know where can i get the other parts.? I need the part where that big rubber band like turns and that makes the blade turn. if anyone can help. THANK YOU.! (sorry for not being specific.)

And got the following answer:

If I knew what kind of saw this is It would be a lot easier to answer the question. What brand is it? Delta? Craftsman? Powermatic? And just exactly what did you throw away? Just the belt (the big rubber band) or the metal parts that it drives and why would you throw parts away if you want to get it going again? The parts of table saws have names. Arbor, trunnion etc,. Also, old is relieve. The really old ones – 50 years or more – can pretty much be rebuilt indefinitely because they are built to be repaired and rebuilt. They were made with heavy cast iron and steel parts. Even if parts are not available they can be fabricated if it is a old enough model and not one of the “throw away” newer models with direct drive motors and flimsy aluminum parts. I have three table saws and all have either been repaired, rebuilt and / or modified. Parts can be purchased from many sources, not just power tool companies but “power distribution” companies who sell parts such as bearings, belts, couplings and fittings as well as electrical parts from electrical and motor supply houses. From what you said, it sounds like you need the arbor drive pulley. Here’s a page from Tool Parts Direct that shows an exploded view of a table saw as an example. Why don’t you have a good look at that saw and see if you can find a make and model number? it should be there, on a metal plate. You are going to need that if you expect to repair this saw.

Stockwillrise asked Why don’t investors see how easy it is to trade stocks for huge profits?

I just don’t understand why so many are losing big money trying to make money in stocks. This year i am making huge profits in the stock market buying call and put options. This market is so easy to make money in but every where i see people losing money and panicking.

And got the following answer:

Because you are just getting lucky.

Options are a way to hedge your risk. But, they can pose significantly more risk than trading stocks.

If you are just buying puts or calls, you might as well go to the craps or roulette table… or buy a lottery ticket.

The analogy that I use: Options are like using a table saw. It’s the right tool for certain jobs… and anyone can run down to Home Depot and buy themselves a Delta Machinery 3 HP Left Tilt Unisaw with Biesemeyer Fence (a really good table saw). Plug it in to the wall and rip away! But, if you don’t know what you’re doing, sooner or later, you’re going to lose some fingers.

Buying puts and calls is only part the story. To be effectively profitable you need to combine BUYING puts and calls with stock and SELLING puts and calls.

Options values change for more reasons than stocks going up or down. You can buy a call, have the stock go up, and lose money. You can also buy a put, have the stock go down, and lose money.

If you don’t understand theta and vega risk, you better be very careful… or, sooner or later, you’re going to have a few less fingers.

** Buy the way, just today I watched a friend’s “put” trade on Apple go from a value of over $70,000 to $8,000 in just a matter of few hours. Can you handle that sort of risk?
