Q&A:

TOOTAl2 asked If the ipad makes the pc obsloete how will cnc machines at work run on a ipad?

The is no way to run cnc machines at work will work with a ipad. so will i be out of job if there are no more pcs?
I dont think this will happen. i hope tim cook is wrong.

And got the following answer:

The IPAD will NEVER replace the PC. People who use the PC just to browse the net and facebook may go that route but there is NO way in hell that it will EVER replace the PC for those who know what it’s capabilities are. The general public hasn’t even a remote clue of what is done with PCs in industry. They’ll have to pry my PC from my cold, dead hands. Actually, I hope it does. It’ll damn sure make Yahoo computer answers a thing of the past. Most users haven’t a clue what they’re doing and shouldn’t be touching anything more than a cheap calculator. It would be a good way to rid the world of computer inept idiots and put the PC back into its proper place. In the hands of educated people. Tim Cook is a moron.

asked What type of CNC Machine should I buy for building guitars?

I know there are several types out there, different sizes, brands, features, etc. but I need one for a small business that will only be building a few guitars (for friends and such) that is specifically tailored to cutting and shaping wood (i.e. maple, sitka spruce, mahogany, rosewood, etc.). Also I’d like some advice on what program to use for the command coding etc. Thanks.

And got the following answer:

A CNC machine for small scale production of guitars is overkill. A decent band saw for the basic body shape and a router with a comprehensive set of bits is all that’s required and would come in considerably cheaper than a CNC wood milling machine http://www.cnc-router-routers.com/

bee bee baww asked What are some ways to improve the mass production of a Candy Dispenser Machine? (made out of wood)?

What are some ways that the assembly line could have made the machine better?

just wondering…I am working on a mass production assembly line soon…

And got the following answer:

CNC machine to cut all the parts. This is assuming better means faster, cheaper, more precise, less labor.

If better means something else, then you’ll have to say what better means.

Gobi K asked What is a really hard plastic that can be CNC machined instead of aluminum?

I am working on a project, I’m creating a mold to create carbon fiber parts. I would like my mold to be CNC machined but aluminum is proving to be quite expensive. I was hoping someone could suggest a good hard plastic that costs less than aluminum but is still is strong enough to be milled and withstand the production of many parts. The parts will be cured at room temperature.

And got the following answer:

Poly Vinyl Chloride? It’s hard, cheap, can be heated and molded to any shape!

BallerBT asked Is Tool and Die Making a good industry to work in?

I am soon going to start an apprenticeship in Tool and Die making and CNC machining. Is this a secure, good job field to get into?

And got the following answer:

Wow! Crazy! I didn’t even know that there were still such things! My mom was a Tool and Die maker for Cherry Textron for about 30 years – she just retired a few years back. I know she complained a lot about having her hours cut and not getting enough overtime and the company switched to using cheaper materials. Its a hard job. I know that much. But both my mom and my grandfather did it. I do know that the pay isn’t what it used to be. When I was growing up, it was decent money, but now it doesn’t pay as well. But if you enjoy it, there should be room for growth, such as managerial opportunities.

adam asked Is it possible to make something similar to a cnc machine but no computer parts?

I want to cut letters out of wood and do it fairly often. I can’t get a real cnc machine but could I make something like it that I can move around with my hands. It would be something to just help guide the router around. Or am I going about it the total wrong way

And got the following answer:

What you want is called a router pantograph. You simply mount a router to it and trace a pattern. The router cuts what you trace. This is the old school way. Pantographs where used long before everyone had a home computer or laptop.

I’m assuming you want to do this the cheapest way possible, that produces the desired outcome.

customartist asked How or where can I find a person or company with the ability to copy a sculpture with a CNC (or other) machine?

I am wanting to reproduce a classic sculpture that I have, in a larger size. I believe that I have seen machines on TV that can accurately measure and reproduce a sculpture without an artist having to actually chiesel it. I just cannot afford thousands to have it hand carved, and I am not very particular about fine quality so long as it is reasonable. Can anyone direct me please?

And got the following answer:

there are 3D scanners and various rapid prototyping machines, ranging from printers to CNC machines. Though large scale printers are much rarer than large scale CNC.

If you google rapid prototyping services you’ll find some companies. But it’s most likely going to be much more expensive than looking if you can locate a larger version of your sculpture, particularly if yours is a popular one. A large run reproduction will always be cheaper than an unique custom fabricated item.
